Indian police kill 26 Maoist militants, including a senior leader | CNN

Must Read

A top government official said on Sunday that police in India’s western state of Maharashtra killed at least 26 Maoist terrorists, including a supreme leader, in an entrapment strike in dense jungle. For decades, the Maoists, often known as Naxals, have fought government troops in violent conflict. Extreme left-wing insurgents claim to be fighting for India’s poor, who have been left behind by the country’s economic prosperity. The mission took place in the Gadchiroli district, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) east of Mumbai, on the boundary between Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh states. According to Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal, the clash between police and terrorists lasted about ten hours.
