Designed for small special-operations teams operating in helicopters that can’t land, the Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) is a method that has been used by American commandos during the Vietnam war. This method has been used to get into and out of dangerous spots quickly. It was first used by Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) and has been adopted by the U.S. military. This method hasn’t been considered necessary during the past few decades, but as great-power competition against near-peer adversaries continues to rise, this technique is considered relevant once again.
