How unruly, knife-wielding swimmers became the first Navy SEALs | Popular Science

Must Read

President Kennedy is credited with creating the Navy SEALs as we know them today after observing the disproportionately large value well-trained small units bring to bigger battles during his World War II service as a commander of a small patrol torpedo boat.

At the onset of WWII, the Allies realized they would ultimately need to make a series of amphibious invasions. The result were the fabled Underwater Demolition Teams, scouts and securers of the littoral region. When Kennedy called on the Pentagon to create the SEALs the UDTs were a natural place to look.

Created out of civilian workmen in the 1940s, the UDTs were outside of typical Navy culture, the SEALs were no different, decorum and rank were superseded by effectiveness and ingenuity.
