How to use military service as a political prop: Don’t | Task and Purpose

Must Read

Once again, the politicians are putting a political spin on the military that’s not sitting well with many.

The White House claimed that the two Marines who appeared to be standing behind Biden during his speech last Thursday were there on purpose. Many conservative media sites, like the National Review and Fox News, expressed their disapproval of the display, while some veterans felt the display was inappropriate. Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, a retired army officer, applauded Biden’s speech and said it was “necessary at this point in our history.” However, he disagreed with the decision of the organization to include Marines in the background. Keilar went on to acknowledge that Trump’s administration politicized the military as well, including sending the National Guard to the southern border “when it’s not in the purview to be domestic law enforcement.”

It’s a good rule of thumb: When considering using the military or service members as political props, the answer is not to.
