How the P226 Handgun Found Greatness with America’s Navy SEALs | National Interest

Must Read

The US military moved away from the M1911A1 and adopted the M9 in 1985. Each branch took on the new weapon but in 1986 when a Navy SEAL was giving a demonstration using his M9 the slide broke off and flew into his face. Berretta later fixed the design issue that caused the slide to crack and break off the SEALs were interested in a new sidearm for the force. The Glock 17 was an early offering, faring well in corrosion tests but it was concluded the Glock was significantly less reliable than the M9. Instead, the SIG Sauer P226 was chosen and became known as the Mk. 25 in SEAL hands. In 2015 Naval Special Warfare Command decided the Glock 19 will gradually replace the Mk. 25.
