How the Burkina Faso Coup Could Impact U.S. Air Force Counterterrorism Operations | Air Force Magazine

The Burkina Faso vice air chief told Air Force Magazine that the recent coup the country went through might interfere with counterterrorism surveillance efforts and targeting efforts. On January 23rd presidential vehicles were found with bullet holes and soldiers mutinied across the country. The former president has not been seen nor heard from. The fear is that the security vacuum often strengthens terrorist efforts. The vast uncontrolled territories of the Sahel are known to harbor Islamic State group and al-Qaeda affiliated group JMIN. With four West African coups in two years, militaries in the region are starting to believe overthrowing civilian governments is a solution to discontent.
