Like all citizens, those joining the military and taking on leadership roles are rapidly becoming products of these oppressive intellectual settings.

 The absence of honest, civil, inclusive, and professional discourse is hurting the country. The quality of Marine’s thinking ought to matter more than rank or position at a time when the complexity and interrelatedness of issues require independent thinking from multiple perspectives, there has instead been a rise in powerful figures working with considerable skill to build and impose one narrative (one thought construct from one perspective) on all members of a group—in J.R.R. Tolkien’s words, “one ring to rule them all.” Yes, we should show respect towards senior citizens. But we ought to show respect to everyone who is concerned enough about a subject to make an effort to communicate their ideas or lessons learned.
