How Army Special Forces standardized Glock pistols| We Are The Mighty

Must Read

Glocks may be one of the most popular pistol manufacturers in the world, but they are not without their detractors. Even though most members of the special operations community preferred them, it took some intentional requirement writing by SOCOM to make them standard issue.

The Beretta M9 was the primary sidearm of the US military since its adoption in 1985. Many complained it lacked the stopping power of the previous standard sidearm, the M1911 which fired .45 ACP. The new standard sidearm, the Sig Sauer M17/M18 similarly fires a 9mm round.

Instead of asking the Army to change the standard issue, Special Forces members got creative and identified that they needed a concealable pistol to conduct plain clothes operations with. In the mid 2000’s they wrote a requirement for a concealed pistol that all but specifically mentioned the Glock 19.
