One of the most critical US Supreme Court gun issues in a decade is now centered on a medieval English statute stretching back nearly seven centuries. The case, which arises from a legal struggle in New York, questions a state rule requiring gun owners seeking a concealed carry permit to demonstrate that they have a valid cause. The nation’s nine supreme court judges are also looking back to the 1328 Statute of Northampton, which dates back to Edward III’s reign, to help them determine how extensive the rights of America’s many gun owners are.
