At Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, Green Berets from the 1st Special Forces Group performed two weeks of hands-on testing with Project Origin unmanned devices. The testing informed the Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) criteria and provided SOF members with a greater understanding of how robots would fight alongside soldiers. The Green Berets employ robots to remove troops from danger as part of an experiment at the University of Manchester with the British Ministry of Defense (GVSC).
Two sniper teams selected distant targets in one experiment and handed them to robots that shot against them. The objective is to disguise the whereabouts of troops as part of the larger objective of deploying robots for surveillance.
The Army is researching the effects of combat robots on troops on the battlefield. In the autumn of 2016, the Army conducted its first force-on-force training cycle that featured a robot. The Project Origin vehicle performed primarily defensive actions, such as obstructing a helicopter landing zone. Later this year, an RCV surrogate vehicle will go to Germany for troop operational testing.
