Officials stated on Thursday that an Army Special Units group is working on testing and launching a fresh new 120mm mortar system platform for US special operations forces across the world.
According to Sgt. 1st Class Zach VanDyke, the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) has formed a new partnership with Elbit America, a subsidiary of Israel-based Elbit Systems, to “develop, test, and field” a new prototype mortar system platform known as “Sling” that comes mounted on the back of a vehicle. Elbit claims the system, which was first presented in January and is meant to integrate with a regular Humvee, can deploy in 30-60 seconds and fire 16 mortar rounds per minute. The Army presently operates three models of Elbit’s 120mm mortar weapons system:
