Google slammed over ad-cookie replacement flip-flop | BBC

Must Read

Some advertising sectors have criticized Google’s “indecision” on which system it intends to replace cookies with. It comes after the company said that Topics, an interest-based user-tracking system, would take over the role of its previous plan, Floc. Floc (Federated Learning of Cohorts) attempted to mask users’ identification by grouping them with identical browsing habits. Google revealed in a blog post that Floc would be replaced with Topics, a similar approach that would organize people into subject clusters based on 350 different categories such as fitness or travel. Meanwhile, while Topics is better than Floc, Bennet Cyphers of the Electronic Frontiers Foundation told The Verge that it “still tells third-party trackers what type of sites you read.”
