McDonough revealed his objectives for veteran homelessness in 2022 on Feb. 25, one of which is to place at least 1,500 homeless veterans in permanent homes in Los Angeles. He intends the VA to lodge 38,000 veterans this year around the country. If the agency meets its targets, it will have sheltered 10% more veterans in Los Angeles and throughout the country by 2021. To meet its goals in Los Angeles, the department is relying on partnerships, increased federal funding, and a sense of urgency, and it’s tackling the problem on multiple fronts, from providing tiny, temporary shelters for homeless veterans to building permanent housing units on its massive VA campus. However, the organization faces problems such as a dearth of housing supply in the region and a paucity of case managers who can assist veterans remain in their homes.
