The Global South is split on who is to blame for the disaster in Ukraine in the Global North. Many people criticize Russia for its imperial ambitions and efforts to subjugate Kyiv, while others accuse the US and its European allies of aggravating Russia by expanding NATO eastwards and equipping Ukraine. But, if history is any guide, neither power is blameless; both are responsible, though to varying degrees. Both have offered Ukraine as a sacrifice on the altar of a new Cold War. The Ukrainian catastrophe, like the Iraqi, Afghan, Syrian, Vietnamese, Philippine, Hungarian, Chinese, Indian, Algerian, Congolese, Chilean, and numerous other imperial sins, will yield nothing positive. Neither for the victims, offenders or the rest of us who are “sitting in darkness.”
