Due to security concerns, French soldiers withdraw from the northern Mali city of Menaka.
French forces return to a military facility in northern Mali to prepare for their ultimate pullout from the Sahel country. The UN envoy warned that the French departure might leave Menaka susceptible to assault by jihadists. The withdrawal from the facility “was performed in an orderly, safe, and transparent manner,” according to a spokeswoman for the French army. In 2020, around 5,500 French soldiers were stationed in the area, but there are now just about 1,000.
