With support from the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Directorate, a US-led coalition successfully arrested four ISIS members near the northern Iraqi city of Erbil.
The arrests were made over the course of several operations that aim to degrade ISIS’s capabilities in the region.
ISIS captured sizable portions of Iraq when they were at their most powerful in 2014. Although they have been declared territorially defeated since 2017, the threat of bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and other crimes like abductions persists.
ISIS members have been taking advantage of remote and partially lawless areas in Iraq’s north between Erbil and Baghdad.
Iraq continues to improve their counterterror capabilities, but the Pentagon expressed concern in its latest reports, admitting Iraqi security forces have enjoyed little operational success independent of coalition assistance.
