According to American officials, a former member of the US special forces was slain this week in Ukraine. They said he wasn’t participating in a sanctioned bout.
Former Navy SEAL Daniel W. Swift has been recognized in official records since March 2019 as having deserted. Swift joined the Navy in 2005, and in 2007 he joined a SEAL team. He would leave the military in 2014, come back, and re-join the SEALs in 2016. Swift took part in an operation in the city of Bakhmut in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine on the evening of January 14 and into the next morning. Swift and two other soldiers were killed when a Russian anti-personnel rocket-propelled grenade was fired at them.
