Advocates have long argued that the VA data are insufficient despite being useful. Numerous veterans may not be counted as suicides in some situations when self-harm plays a significant part. 

The number of veteran suicides may be much higher than the government estimates. a new evaluation from the U.S. The Veterans Administration announces a drop in the suicide rate for veterans nationwide, but the decrease brings to light a long-standing concern raised by suicide prevention advocates: the potential undercounting of data that the agency gathers. In some situations when self-harm plays a significant role, the deaths of many veterans may not be classified as suicides. These include accidental overdoses, drug-related deaths, and alcohol-related incidents.
