First-ever pig-to-human heart transplant offers hope for thousands in need of organs | USA Today

Must Read

At the University of Maryland Medical Center, Dave Bennett, 57, made history by becoming the first human to receive a genetically modified pig heart. Doctors replaced his heart with one from a 1-year-old, 240-pound pig that had been gene-edited and raised expressly for this reason. Bennett accepted the procedure on Dec. 15, and the process started. On Dec. 20, Maryland authorities rushed to submit a request to the FDA, asking “compassionate use” approval to proceed. On New Year’s Eve, the FDA gave emergency approval for the procedure, which took place on Jan. 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
