Explainer: How does conscription work in Russia? | Al Jazeera

Must Read

In Russia, the conscription season occurs twice a year, in the spring and autumn.

Russia’s annual military draft is underway, and as the crisis in Ukraine enters its third month, human rights groups report an uptick in requests for assistance to escape military duty. Many families remain skeptical, fearful that their kids may be involved in what Moscow has described as a “special military operation” in Ukraine. In Russia, conscription seasons last two months — from April 1 to July 15 (spring) and from October 1 to December 31 (fall) (autumn). Some males between 18 and 27 who are in good health and have no outstanding offenses may be summoned to service. Due to the situation in Ukraine, calls to the hotline are tenfold what they are generally during conscription season.

Approximately 1.2 million men are eligible for the draft each year, although only roughly 400,000 serve. Before being assigned to specific units, new conscripts endure up to eight months of training. Failure to appear in person at the registration office carries hefty penalties and a two-year jail term. According to him, no regulations prohibit sending troops to active battle zones after four months of training. He claims that since the Ukraine crisis, some males have left the country to evade military duty.
