The United States is considering using existing stockpiles of M1 Abrams tanks to provide the 31 tanks recently promised to Ukraine, according to Stanley Brown, the principal deputy assistant secretary for the bureau of political-military affairs.
Brown said a decision on which versions of the tank would be sent had not been made, nor had it been decided whether to produce them or draw them from existing stockpiles using presidential drawdown authority. The latter mechanism could expedite the delivery of the tanks to Ukraine. The State Department official said he did not know when the decision would be made or when the tanks would be sent. The announcement of the tanks came after Germany said it would provide Ukrainian forces with Leopard tanks.
