Ex-Afghan interpreter praised by top soldier is still in the dark about his immigration status | CBC

Must Read

Canada has not informed Afghan refugees about the interpreter immigration program.

A former translator has waited almost a year to learn whether he is eligible for Canada’s unique program for Afghan nationals who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian government. He claims he changed hiding spots fifteen times before reaching the Pakistani border in May. Taliban authorities have issued an arrest warrant for him. The office of Immigration Minister Sean Fraser reports that around 15,000 of the 18,000 available slots in the special immigration measures program have been filled. It is unclear whether candidates who have not gotten responses to their inquiries are included or eliminated.

Jenny Kwan, the immigration critic for the New Democratic Party, said, “People’s lives are at risk every minute of every day.” According to the office of the chief of the military staff, General Wayne Eyre “sympathizes with the struggle of all Afghans.” The government has established a target of resettling 40,000 Afghans in Canada; so far, it has relocated 16,645 Afghans. So far, about 7,205 Afghans have entered Canada under the exceptional immigration procedure.
