Earthquake death toll tops 33,000, Turkey starts legal action | Reuters

Must Read

Rescue teams are still finding survivors almost a week after the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, while the death toll continues to rise.

Over 33,000 people have been killed in both countries following the earthquake and major aftershocks. The quake, which struck last week, was the deadliest in Turkey since 1939. The Turkish authorities are beginning legal action over building collapses as business owners in one of the worst-hit cities, Antakya, emptied their shops to avoid looting. Many residents and aid workers have said that security conditions have worsened with reports of looting in collapsed homes and businesses. Facing criticism over his response to the disaster, President Tayyip Erdogan has promised the government will deal firmly with looters.
