A court has been informed that a self-described Doomsday “prepper” converted his home into an explosives factory and detonated numerous devices in the garden.
When police searched Simon Pilgrim’s apartment in a multi-occupancy building last December, the 41-year-old Derby resident was taken into custody. According to evidence presented before the Old Bailey, officers found 13 functional improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in his room and the burned remains of another 40 IEDs in the King Alfred Street backyard. The court was informed that there were around 307g of handmade explosives in all, along with the necessary chemicals to produce an additional 824g. Pilgrim discussed being a “prepper” (someone who is preparing himself for an imminent war or disaster)
