Hypersonic weapons, which can travel at five times the speed of sound and maneuver to avoid interception, are being aggressively pursued by Russia and China. The Air Force, Army, and Navy are all developing hypersonic weapons in the United States. The Pentagon plans to use new authorities to strategically accelerate the transition of operational prototypes and advanced manufacturing technologies. Lawmakers have also created the Hypersonics Caucus to promote the utilization of these weapons, with a focus on supporting the defense industrial base’s investments in offensive and defensive hypersonic technologies. Raytheon has also won a contract to build new missile warning satellites for the US Air Force, and the Air Force has ordered new radar planes.
