Green Berets with 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) and members of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense-Force (JGSDF) completed jumps outside of Japan for the first time ever over Guam on July 30th. The exercise comes as part of Defender Pacific 21, a U.S. Army Pacific initiative intended to apply National Defense Strategy through realistic, repeatable training across air, land, sea, and cyber domains. Following the airborne infiltration, the joint forces destroyed an anti-air weapons system and enemy command and control node. The entire operation took 36 hours from initial planning to completion. Bilingual Green Berets and JGSDF members were placed strategically throughout formations to ensure communications were understood. These exercises provide valuable opportunities to build relationships with other militaries and the Indo-Pacific theatre is currently one of the most consequential on the planet.
