An 80-year-old CIA officer who led the first squad into Afghanistan following 9/11 has passed away.

Gary Schroen led the first squad of CIA officials on an operation against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. His activities, Operation JAWBREAKER, paved the way for America’s unrelenting pursuit of bin Laden and other 9/11 conspirators. Director of the CIA William J. Burns confirmed Schroen’s death at age 80 on August 1, 2022. On September 26, 2001, Gary Schroen led a team of seven CIA officials into Afghanistan. This prepared the way for Task Force Dagger, a mission to expel Al-Qaeda and the Taliban from Afghanistan. The Mi-17 helicopter that Schroen and his colleagues used for this audacious mission was dedicated to CIA property.
