China’s Military Introduces the First Autonomous Drone Carrier in History
Using artificial intelligence, China has launched the first unmanned drone carrier capable of autonomous navigation in the open sea. The Zhu Hai Yun is about 290 feet in length, 45 feet in width, and 20 feet in depth and can carry dozens of air, sea, and submarine drones. Beijing has defined the vessel as a tool for marine research, but some analysts believe it might also serve as a military vessel.
The ship will be remotely operated and has a maximum speed of 18 knots or around 20 miles per hour. After sea testing, it is planned to be delivered by the end of 2022. China’s autonomous system data might aid surveillance, domain awareness, navigational assistance for PLA submarines, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
