Can there be another Civil War?

From President Biden’s appeal to safeguard democracy against “semi-fascist” elements of the Republican Party to former President Trump’s promise to consider pardoning individuals who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. If re-elected, the debate over America’s future has become extremely heated. Bravado on the far right about igniting a new civil war ignores both the atrocities and results of the past one. Politicians and commentators that stoke these flames would be best advised to pay attention or hide. A recent piece published in The National Interest examined this disturbance in light of the factors that led to the American Civil War (1861–1865). Before 11 slave states felt they had to quit the Union, the conflict went through three distinct stages of escalation.
