Biden inherits a challenging civil-military legacy | War on the Rocks

Must Read

Jim Golby and Peter Feaver elaborate on Biden’s future restoring a civil-military relationship. President Trump’s legacy consisted of what is referred to as the “4 P’s: the president, people, processes, and politicization.” Golby and Feaver make a point that while Biden may be one of the most experienced presidents entering the Oval Office, President Trump was considering one of the least to have political insight involving national security when he entered. He relied heavily on what he called “my generals” for their experience and wisdom regarding military advice. The remnants of the previous administration before that, the Obama era, still will also affect Biden’s presidency considering at one point the “National Security Council staff that had grown so large that even its own director admitted reform was necessary.” Biden will be facing one of the most extreme country divides. With the hope of the Biden administration not becoming a carbon print of Obama’s, Golby and Feaver note they will have to be swift with policy and its process, as well as the economic faults the country has suffered due to the pandemic, and establish a healthier path for civil military relations.
