Bamboo vipers and many-banded kraits: Experiencing Hong Kong’s snake safari | CNN

Must Read

An encounter with bamboo vipers and many-banded kraits during a snake safari in Hong Kong.

More than 50 different species of snakes, including the potentially lethal King Cobra and the Burmese Python, which can grow to over 26 feet, can be found in Hong Kong, a city that is nearly as big as Los Angeles and home to some of the densely populated areas in the entire planet. As a result, the city’s 7.3 million residents frequently come into contact with wildlife. William Sargent roars into action, slipping on a protective glove, and launches himself into the dark green jungle of northern Hong Kong just as his torchlight catches the distinctive glimmer of snakeskin.  Since 2017, Sargent, a police-approved snake specialist, has guided nocturnal “Snake Safaris” through Hong Kong’s lush, biodiverse landscapes, including Tai Mo Shan Country Parkreptiles. Snakes are considered a threat in Hong Kong, where they are either consumed in soup or employed in traditional Chinese medicine.
