Ayman al-Zawahiri: Shock in Kabul as US kills al-Qaeda leader | BBC

Must Read

It was claimed that a top target on America’s wanted list had died.

Sherpur is a neighborhood in Kabul infamous for its gaudy multi-story houses and is derided as the bastion of corrupt warlords and bureaucrats. It is near several Western embassies with solid walls that also shut down when the Taliban gained control. As Kabul awoke to the news that the United States had assassinated al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri by a drone attack, the scene of this combustible moment seemed oddly peaceful. Ayman al-Zawahiri, a top target on America’s most-wanted list, has been reported dead several times. If he was still alive, he was said to live in seclusion in the harsh terrain near the Afghan-Pakistan border.

But it has just come to light that he resided in Kabul as a guest of the Taliban leadership. Since assuming control in Kabul, the Taliban have been walking a political tightrope; how can they remain on the right side of the global Islamist community while preserving relations with al-Qaeda? How can the United States and other Western nation’s aid the people of Afghanistan, who are stuck in a humanitarian catastrophe, yet many Taliban commanders remain subject to US terrorist sanctions?
