The commander of the Australian Defence Force has demanded senior officers provide justification for why they should retain honors and medals bestowed during the Afghanistan war.
The opposition claims that the government needs to justify the recommendation of this procedure. Veterans and members of the ADF have been given 28 days to justify maintaining their honors. Defence Minister Peter Dutton later put the issue on hold, but this month General Campbell reopened the procedure with the new Minister Richard Marles’ approval. Former SAS captain Mr. Hastie argued that the previous administration had taken action to address both the alleged war crimes and more general cultural issues noted by the Brereton Inquiry.
