Army’s Historic WWII Training Grounds Named America’s Newest National Monument | Military.com

Must Read

Some of the surviving veterans who trained at Camp Hale have found it heartwarming that the site has been designated as a national monument.

The country’s newest national monument will be a vast expanse of mountains and valleys where soldiers from the Army’s 10th Mountain Division trained in snowshoeing, skiing, and rock climbing before their battle in the Italian Alps. The White House issued a statement following Biden’s signature on the proclamation, stating that it “preserves and safeguards the mountains and valleys where the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division prepared for their gallant service that finally brought WWII to an end. “Their skills, grit and endurance were instrumental in protecting democracy and fighting the spread of fascism.” The Democratic U.S. senators from Colorado, Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, have been working on legislation to protect the area for years, and this declaration of a national monument by Biden is his first as president.
