Army Considers New Rifles, Machine Guns, and Squad-Autonomous Vehicles

The Army has ordered 29,046 Next Generation Squad Weapons, an umbrella phrase for Sig Sauer and Lonesar Future Weapons products: This is a significant increase above the 12,000 new weapons purchased this year and the 3,000 purchased in 2021. Units will field-test the weapons to gather input that will inform the Defense Department’s selection of the Army’s new rifle and machine gun. The Army aims to cut its active-duty component’s size from 476,000 to 473,000. Additionally, the military wants funding for 22 Combat Training Center, or CTC, rotations.

One of those rotations will take place in Alaska after a beta test in March in which a rotation took place at -65 degrees Fahrenheit. Army forces in Alaska will also get 13 Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicles, or CATVs.
