The final known location of the 11th Airborne was Fort Benning, Georgia, when it was deactivated in 1965. During World War II, the historic unit fought in New Guinea and the Philippines as part of the Pacific Theater. According to Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, if activated, the division would function as an “operational headquarters.” In addition, the Army is working on its new Arctic Strategy, which intends to modernize and restructure its Alaskan forces. Legislators have requested that the Army explore establishing an Arctic brigade for Alaska-based details. The initiative is designed to address a common concern among people stationed in Alaska: they do not comprehend why they are there.
Currently, the two infantry brigades in Alaska wear the “Tropic Lightning” patch of the 25th Infantry Division, located in Hawaii. It is not yet apparent how additional identifiers, such as unit patches and badges, will factor into the endeavor.
