Alone at The Edge of the World | The Atavist Magazine

Must Read

Spectacular epic about the Golden Globe Race, in which competitors sail alone and without assistance from modern technology around the globe.

The British woman Susie Goodal, 29, had spent three years preparing for this trip. She wasn’t prepared for how much it would take of her. She enjoyed the preparation involved in setting up her boat for a voyage that would prevent her from setting foot on land for close to a year. She wasn’t anticipating the attention it would garner or the fact that everyone would want a piece of her. Her hands were bleeding and charred. Goodall was alone herself, save for the yacht, which had been her friend and home for the past five months and 15,000 miles of sailing.Goodall was the only woman and the youngest of the 18 skippers who were reviving the Golden Globe Race, dubbed “a voyage for madmen.” The race involved solitary, nonstop sailing around the globe in a small boat without modern equipment. It was last held 50 years earlier.
