Sean Schofield is one of almost 6,000 volunteers from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and other western nations who have forsaken civilian life to fight in Ukraine. He has seen live battles, participated in operations to ferry people through war zones, and directly contributed to Ukraine’s reaction to Russia’s vast military machine. The Ukrainian government provides volunteers with a place to stay and food to eat, but the volunteer is responsible for all other expenses, including travel expenses. He paid for his vacation, which cost him $1,800 to get there and $4,000 to return. The initial plan called for him to remain there until the end of June, but he may need to prolong his stay if the capital is once again endangered.
Sean Schofield, a resident of Cullman, Alabama, will go to Ukraine to assist in the battle against pro-Russian insurgents. It is rather remarkable for a Cullman resident to see the situation there and conclude, “They need me.” I can assist.’
