Pakistani counter-terrorism police have announced the arrest of Amin ul Haq, a senior al-Qaeda leader with close ties to Osama bin Laden. Haq, who has been on the U.N. sanctions list since 2001, was detained in Punjab province following a year-long manhunt. The arrest is seen as a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, potentially foiling future attacks planned by Haq.

Haq’s capture took place near Jhelum, with Deputy Inspector General of Police Usman Gondal confirming that his apprehension had prevented potential sabotage of key installations in the province. Haq, born in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province in 1960, has been linked to al-Qaeda activities, including coordinating security for bin Laden. His arrest marks Pakistan’s first significant al-Qaeda capture in years.
