In response to inquiries from Breaking Defense, AFSOC spokeswoman Lt. Col. Becky Heyse stated that a flying demonstration of Lockheed Martin’s Airborne High Energy Laser, which will be integrated on an AC-130J Ghostrider, will begin in summer 2023 and last into the fall.
In a 2023 flight test, an AC-130J gunship from AFSOC will launch a laser weapon. Flight demonstrations will occur in the summer or fall of 2023, but it’s still not certain if development will result in a legitimate program of record. WASHINGTON — A year later than anticipated, in 2023, Air Force Special Operations Command will test an airborne laser on an AC-130J gunship. After completing factory acceptance testing of the system, Lockheed shipped the 60-watt laser to AFSOC in October 2021. Flight demonstrations were scheduled to begin at that time.
