Died on Dec. 28, 2017, Master Sgt. William T. “Bill” Thompson is the chosen one to be honored by the members of Special Forces Association Chapter 29. Thompson is a World War II veteran who enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
He was assigned to Operation Jedburgh due to his fluency in French and German and his proficiency with Army radios. Operation Jedburgh is a team of British and American soldiers who have captured Nazi-held areas to organize and arm the resistance. The force also conducted intelligence missions alongside sabotage operations.
During his service in the Army, he was awarded two Bronze Stars, the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for fighting alongside the Allies against the Germans, and the Chinese Special Breast Order of Yun Hui, the highest medal granted to foreign nationals for courage.
