Grounded, a new opera about drone strikes will premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. on Oct. 28, 2023. The opera follows Jess, an Air Force pilot who is reassigned to the drone program after becoming pregnant. The play explores motherhood, the ethics of drone strikes, and Jess’s desire to return to the skies. The opera is adapted from a 2013 play of the same name by George Brant and is composed by Jeanine Tesori. It will use LED screens to provide backdrops and visualize what Jess sees while operating drones. The production is sponsored by General Dynamics, the maker of the F-16, which plays a role in the play.
