More than 100,000 civilians were evacuated by the United States, many of them Afghans who had supported the country during its 20-year conflict. Safi Rauf is an Afghan-American who had served in a U.S. Afghanistan’s Special Forces  was on the phone with their team on the ground, telling them what to do, who to choose, and where to go as various government agencies and U.S. departments and collaborated chaotically to pull personnel out.
