Christians in the South Caucasus are threatened by ethnic cleansing. The route leading to the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is home to 120,000 Armenian Christians, was shut down last week by the Azeri government.
In order to build a land bridge to its exclave of Nakhichevan on the Turkish border, the 97 percent Muslim and culturally Turkish nation of Azerbaijan wants to abolish the existence of Armenian Christians in Karabakh. The dispute could develop into a significant humanitarian crisis. The major goal of this operation is to give Armenian Christians in Karabakh a taste of what will happen once Russian peacekeepers leave by demonstrating to them that Azerbaijan may block them off from the outside world at any time.
