The Legendary Gary Schroen: one of the most esteemed and experienced CIA operatives.

His wife Anne McFadden, 66, said on a recent day inside their house where the counterintelligence expert allowed her first interview since her husband’s passing last month, “You know, he did not speak too much about what he won the medals for.”

But McFadden said that her husband’s Jawbreaker operation, which helped pave the way for the Taliban’s demise in the autumn of 2001 and the 20-year U.S. war in Afghanistan, was what really satisfied Schroen.

Schroen was described as a “legend and inspiration to every Agency member” in a statement issued by agency director William J. Burns upon his passing, which occurred soon after a CIA drone attack killed al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.
