According to Somali military officials, 69 al-Shabab fighters were killed in two separate military operations in central and southern Somalia.
At least seven government soldiers were killed in the insurgents’ fatal raid on a nearby Somali military base, including a commander. A day after the government declared a “historic triumph” against the jihadists by seizing important coastal towns like Harardhere, which used to be the major operational port for pirates kidnapping ships at sea for ransom, al-Shabab launched its attack on the government stronghold. In a separate operation, Somali National Army forces attacked a militant outpost at Goof-Gadud village, 30 kilometers north of Baidoa, the interim administrative center of Southwest state, on Thursday, killing at least 20 al-Shabab militants and injuring others.
