4 Specialized Units That Stormed The Beaches Of Normandy On D-Day | Coffee or Die

Must Read

During World War II, the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion stormed into combat with a unique weapon: a large bag of glitter to dazzle the enemy.

Under a constant bombardment of machine-gun and artillery fire, more than 160 000 soldiers tried to charge the coastline. Among them were several tiny, specialized units with one-of-a-kind duties. Because of his involvement in leading landing ships to beaches, Lt. Phil Bucklew is considered the “founder of Naval Special Warfare.” Naval Combat Demolition Units consist of demolitions-trained sailors. The 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion was the only all-Black regiment to assault the Normandy beaches on D-Day.

The 320th played a crucial role in shielding ships and landing boats from German strafing runs. The NCDUs had a 52 percent casualty rate during the invasion. As a medic, Sgt. Waverly “Woody” Woodson Jr. performed admirably that day. After passing over submerged mines, Woodson’s landing craft was blasted out of the sea. He entered the water, circumnavigated a blazing tank, and sprinted into the waves.

These tanks were designed by the British specialist in tanks, Major-General Sir Percy Hobart.
