Army Captain Ian Fishback witnessed prisoner abuse at a forward operating base in Iraq in 2002. He asked his superiors for clarification on what he saw as clear breaches of the Geneva Convention but was told the honor of his unit was at stake at to keep quiet. When the secretary of the Army visited Iraq, Fishback asked him to provide answers but he was met with more obfuscation. In 2005 after the Abu Ghraib events came to light, Fishback sat down with members of his unit from Iraq and Human Rights Watch, penning a letter they would send to Senator and torture victim, John McCain.
