The US State Department issued a statement last Thursday warning visitors about potential terrorist attacks in Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s government responded by asking the US to stop spreading falsehoods about the country.
Ethiopia has been the site of a civil war like conflict for over a year. Rebel forces from the country’s northern Tigray region have been gaining ground against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s national army.
The Ethiopian response to the US State Department’s fairly neutral coverage of events appears to be some level of damage control. The United Nations has said that nearly 400,000 people in the Tigray region face starvation, the last year of conflict has cost thousands of Ethiopian lives on both sides.
