The Esbern Snare responded to reports of a speedboat with ladders on board poised to attack cargo ships.
Off the coast of West Africa in the Gulf of Guinea, a Royal Danish Navy frigate, HDMS Esbern Snare (F342), engaged with a pirate vessel during a deployment intended to rid the region of such activity.
A Danish Air Force helicopter observed a speedboat with 8 men onboard in the vicinity of merchant ships carrying several tools linked to piracy including ladders.
A team of Danish naval SOF traveled by RHIB to the speedboat and demanded they halt and permit boarding. When they didn’t comply several warning shots were fired to which the pirates responded with gunfire of their own. A brief engagement resulted in the death of four and the capturing of the remaining four while no Danish injuries were sustained.
